Five Stylish Ways to Add Color to Your Business Wardrobe

Stylish Business Dress Tips: How to Add Subtle Color to Your Business Look

Dark navy suit, white shirt, and a striped blue or burgundy color tie – the classic business look that, although professional, looks rather uniform than unique. Below are five ways you can add new colors and style to your business look while at the same time keeping your ensemble professional, elegant, and (should you choose so) conservative enough for any industry.

One of the most fun, and also most subtle ways to add both color and pattern to your business look is with socks. Stripes, argyles, polka dots, checks, herringbone textures, and more come to mind here. What you want to avoid are big picture (aka novelty) socks, white colored socks, socks that are too short and show skin, as well as colors that clash with your suit. Keep in mind that the smaller the pattern, and softer the color contrast, the more elegant the socks will be. A good choice for navy suits worn with brown shoes are navy socks with tan polka dots or narrow stripes, for instance. Give it a try!

Much more noticeable than colored socks is the pocket square as it sits right on your left chest. Pick a color that contrasts the suit but compliments either the tie or the dress shirt. Avoid exact matching tie and pocket square combinations, but instead choose a pair that compliments in color but is different in design. Finally, think about how you want to fold the pocket square. The simpler the fold the sleeker it will appear. For more information, please check out our guide on How to Fold Your Pocket Square

If you dress in suit and tie, then this would be the easiest way to add new color to your business wardrobe. Ties come in any imaginable color and design. But, before you opt for a bright red tie, think about the season, the occasion, as well as the rest of your outfit. Brighter colors should be reserved for the sunny days in spring and summer for instance. Navy suits look great with ties in orange, blue, pink, browns, any shade of green and yellow, as well as most reds. Black and charcoal suits can be worn with any tie color, and tan summer suits look exceptionally good with ties in black, navy, orange, pink, and lavender.

The dress shirt is another clothing piece that allows for colors other tan the classic “business white”. Keep in mind however, that, because the shirt is larger in size, we got to be a bit more subtle in our color choice compared to choosing a tie color. Always excellent choices are shirts in light blue and light grays. A bit more fashion-forward, but also a bit more bold, are pastel colored shirts in pinks, light yellows, soft greens, and lavender. These shirt colors are great for the spring and summer but are a bit less conservative. If a solid pink shirt is a bit too much for your taste or profession, then play with patterns instead. A solid white shirt with fine pink checks would be a perfect example here (as shown by the window-pane check shirt by Brooks Brothers on the left)

Who said that your wrist watch needs to be either silver or gold in color? Are we in fact confined to wrist bands in just four colors of brown, black, silver, and gold? While these are the most classic and most elegant choices, there is room to experiment with some fun colors on either the bezel and/or the band. Keep in mind that the more color you show and the brighter the color, the more attention it will attract. We suggest you don’t overdo it here. Instead keep it subtle yet fun and unique. A perfect example here is the watch by Panerai displayed on the left. The yellow leather band certainly adds color without drawing too much attention. The black watch and bezel is the perfect compliment – making this time piece an excellent choice for suits in gray, charcoal, and navy.
