All a Man Needs to Know About Dress Pants

mens-dress-pantsOne of the most important things for the modern man to realize is that it doesn’t matter what type of style one embraces; owning at least a few pairs of high-quality dress pants is essential. While dress pants are often considered to be reserved for business-casual or formal occasions, there is absolutely no reason why one can’t wear them casually or otherwise. The right pair of dress pants can do a great deal of good for the well-dressed man, and should never be underestimated. The following are just a few tips for shopping for the perfect pair of dress pants for you, no matter what type of style you tend to lean towards.

Pleated vs. Flat-Front
The first thing you’ll want to take into consideration when shopping for the perfect pair of dress pants is whether to go with those which are plated or those which feature a flat front. Each of these options has its merits; pleats work exceptionally well for people who have relatively thick thighs, for example. That said, flat-fronted dress pants are a bit more modern, and tend to look far better on slim men than their pleated counterparts. If you decide to go with pleated pants, strive to stick with those that feature a single pleat, which will lend a classic look to your ensemble without being “too much.”

Cuffs
The next element of dress pants that needs to be considered is whether or not the pants you set out to purchase will feature cuffs. As with pleats, there are reasons for and against wearing pants with cuffs. For example, tall & lanky men will find cuffs to be exceptionally flattering, while shorter men will find that cuffs actually take away from one’s height, making them a poor option. While pleated pants require cuffs (cuffs hold the pleat in place), flat-fronted pants do not. If you find a pair of cuffed pants that you really like yet would prefer to do away from the cuffs, you’ll be happy to know that most tailors can take on this job without altering the pants in a dramatic manner.

Material
It’s not uncommon for material to go overlooked by those who are in the market for a pair of dress pants, which is a real shame. The fact is, material can make or break the look and feel of your pants, and should never be underestimated. Wool is a common material used in dress pants, and is durable/warm enough to withstand harsh winter weather; it’s also difficult to care for, and must be dry-cleaned. Cotton pants, on the other hand, are light in weight, typically inexpensive and can usually be washed at home. While wool pants are considered seasonless, cotton and linen trousers are typically associated with summer-wear.

You’re also likely to stumble upon polyester blends, which are common in budget dress pants. Polyester blends are durable and easy to care for, but many people prefer wool/cotton for over poly-blends for the comfort that they provide. Strive to try on a few pairs of pants made out of different materials to get a feel for the differences yourself.
