Accessories For Black Tie Attire

Mens-Black-Tie-DressAre you going to an event calling for a black tie dress code?  Do you already have a black tux, formal white dress shirt, and black bow tie but would like to know how to create a unique and personal style without committing a fashion Faux Pas? The trick in creating a more personal touch while dressing in classic black tie lies in the accessories. Below is a list of items that will set you apart from all the other tuxes and black bow ties.

Unique Black Tie Shirts
The most common shirt style worn for black tie attire is the formal white dress shirt with a wing tip collar and French cuffs. Other great style choices are pleated dress shirts (can not be worn with waistcoat but only with cummerbund), Mandarin collared dress shirts (worn with decorative stud instead of bow tie), as well as shirts made from unique fabrics such as fine pique cotton.

Your Shoes
Believe it or not, but it is your shoes that get the most attention. If you want to add something unique to your black tie look then choose dress shoes made from shiny patent leather. If the oxford lace-ups are too plain then you may also opt for dressy pumps.

The Opera Scarf
This white or ivory color accessory is usually made from fine silk of cashmere. It is not tied around the neck but worn hanging over the shoulders. The opera scarf was initially worn by men so that they could offer their date extra comfort and warmth during an opera’s intermission. Ever since this accessory has been an accessory for men’s black tie dress code.

A Note on Colors
Although the traditional black tie look consists of a black & white color scheme, there is some room for some color. The tux for example can be midnight blue – an acceptable alternative to black. In addition, so called “Warm Weather Black Tie” requires a white dinner jacket worn with black trousers and black bow tie.

Traditionally the bow tie is black in color but dark maroon red or midnight blue is also acceptable. Finally, there is the cummerbund and/or the waistcoat. If you opt for a maroon or midnight blue bow tie, then these two accessories can be worn in matching colors.
