Combing Multiple Plaid Patterns

How to Combine Several Plaid Patterns in one Outfit

fuschia-plaid-tieMost fashion experts will agree that matching several plaid patterns is not just a fashion Faux Pas but painful to look at. While this is true in most cases, there is in fact a way to combine several different plaids and checks into one great looking outfit. Below are three tips on how to successful combine multiple plaid patterns on shirt, suit, and tie.

1. Scale
You can combine different plaid patterns on shirt, tie, suit, and other accessories as long as the plaid patterns are different in size. Wearing a dress shirt with a micro gingham check can be combined with a large scale tartan check tie for instance. As long as the size of the pattern is different you will be OK. This is true in general. Pairing a striped tie with striped shirt is also no problem as long as the stripes are different in width and size.

2. Contrasting Background
Rule #1 above states that you can only combine plaid patterns if they are different in scale (size). There is one exception however. If the plaids do not overlap, meaning they are not worn on top of each other, then you can combine two similar sized plaid patterns as long as the colors coordinate. Pairing a plaid patterned pocket square with a plaid patterned tie is a perfect example.

3. Texture
Besides scale and color, you should consider fabric textures and weaves. A coarser fabric like tweed can be paired with a smoother silk for instance even if the plaids are identical in size.
