Dress Tips for Casual Dinner Parties

Guy’s Style Tips for Casual Dinner Parties

casual-dinner-party-dress-codeA lot of men who get invited to a casual dinner party for the first time don’t know where to start when it comes to choosing the right outfit for the occasion. Getting invited to a dinner party is inevitable, though; especially for those who have a lot of friends and acquaintances. Bearing this in mind, it’s important to take the time to figure out what types of clothing are acceptable at such an event, as no one wants to show up looking like they don’t fit in with the rest of the attendees. Fortunately, dressing for a casual dinner party doesn’t have to be to difficult at all, and doesn’t usually require one to stray too far from how they typically dress on any other given day. Strive to take the following tips into consideration, all of which can help you to look the part the next time you walk into a casual dinner party situation.

Stick with Chinos and Jeans
When it comes to choosing the right pair of pants for a dinner party, you’ve got plenty of options to take into consideration. That said, most of the people who attend casual dinner parties are likely to be wearing either jeans or chinos, both of which are typical of casual dress. After all, a high-quality pair of men’s designer jeans is perfect for adding an attractive highlight to your appearance without making you look pretentious or over-dressed, as is a pair of simple & subdued khaki chinos. Avoid the urge to wear dress pants, as you’d likely be the only one at the party to be doing so, and no one wants to stick out like a sore thumb.

Leave the Tee at Home
T-shirts certainly have a time and a place; they happen to be extremely versatile, actually. That said, you won’t be doing yourself any favors by wearing a t-shirt to a dinner party, no matter how casual it might be. Rather than wearing your favorite tee, you can do yourself a few favors by choosing either a long-sleeved dress shirt in the fall/winter or a polo shirt in the spring/summer. Each of these options remains casual, yet adds a touch of elegance to any ensemble that they are a part of. If it is exceptionally cold outside, don’t hesitate to wear a sweater on top of a dress shirt, which can look great while still remaining casual.

Go Light on the Accessories
Accessorizing is something that a lot of guys fall back on in order to add highlights to their appearance; something that can be extremely effective in certain scenarios. When having a casual dinner with friends, however, you don’t need to be trying to impress anyone. In fact, your goal at a casual dinner party should be to look good without wearing anything that draws unnecessary attention to yourself, meaning you’ll do best by leaving most of your accessories at home. When choosing a belt, for example, avoid studded, western-style or otherwise “loud” examples, sticking instead with simple black or brown leather varieties. The more subtle your appearance, the better.

Tie or Tie-less?
For the most part wearing neckties would be overdressing. While the classic striped business tie in burgundy or navy might not suit the occasion, trendy skinny ties can just be the perfect accessory. Pick a solid skinny tie and wear it slightly loosely tied. Pair the skinny tie with jeans and a casual sports coat and you will have a trendy look that is elegant yet not too “business-like”.
