What to Wear on a First Date

first-date-fashionGoing on a first date with someone new can be just as nerve-wracking as it is enjoyable. After all, most first dates are relatively blind in that it can be difficult to tell what the other person goes for in terms of style. Bearing this in mind, it’s important to put the right amount of time and effort into choosing an ensemble that will actually go over well with your date. While doing so may not be easy, there are plenty of things you can do in order to decrease your chances of running into a train wreck. By taking the following tips into consideration, you can relax and enjoy your date instead of worrying about what she thinks of your appearance.

Think Business-Casual
Dressing for a date is all about knowing the environment that you’re about to enter into. The vast majority of first dates take place in restaurants and bars after 6 pm. In such an environment, business-casual is an appropriate dress code to consider following. Khakis, slacks and dark-washed designer jeans all serve as appropriate choices for pants, while a button-up or cashmere sweater each make for the perfect top. When choosing an ensemble, consider whether or not it would be right for the office; if not, you may want to scale things back a bit.

Avoid Over-Accessorizing
A lot of people feel tempted to wear a variety of different accessories on a first date as an attempt to gain attention to themselves. While accessorizing can no doubt be effective, it can actually cause more harm than good in certain situations; especially if it is overdone. Avoid wearing too many accessories, sticking instead to the essentials; a nice watch, for example, can be very effective in this situation, while gold chains and other “loud” accessories should be avoided at all costs. As a rule of thumb, if your outfit feels as if it might be overly accessorized, it most likely is, and should be augmented.

Go Easy on the Cologne
No one wants to botch the first date by not smelling their best. That said, many people take cologne way too far when getting ready for a date, applying far more than is actually necessary. Too much cologne is just that; too much. If you douse yourself down with fragrance, you’re more likely to scare your date away than you are to bring her closer. One of the best ways to apply cologne in a conservative manner is to spray your wrists lightly and work the cologne into your neck , shoulders and chest. You’re likely to find that a little bit of cologne goes a very long way; especially on a first date.
