Guide to Modern Black Tie

Modern Black Tie Guide: Three Looks for Contemporary Black Tie

For those of you that are interested in stepping out of the traditionalist’s approach to black tie attire, we at Mens-Ties created a list of style tips that will add a more modern flair to this formal dress code. While these tips will indeed be considered fashion-forward, they are in no way upsetting to this timeless dress etiquette. Give these a try yourself and we guarantee that you will receive plenty of compliments.

Double Breasted Tuxes

While not a new trend, the DB tux has recently resurfaced in men’s fashion. Celebrities such as Tom Hanks and Tom Ford are just a few who were spotted wearing this cut during recent celebrity events. One thing you should pay particular attention to when wearing a double breasted jacket, is perfect fit. Even if you think that the jacket fits alright, we recommend you take a trip to the tailor. Double breasted jackets not only need to hug your shoulders, but also need to fit your torso, waist, cuffs, and overall length. Most DB tuxes feature slightly larger peak lapels. Another good option is the shawl collar.

Oversized Bow Ties

Especially in combination with the DB tux (above) these oversized pieces are the perfect complement. Anything with a spread above 3 inches is considered “large” and bow ties exceeding 3.5 inches in height are considered “oversized”. Ideal are these pieces when paired with unique fabrics such as velvet, pique, or grenadine cloth. Last but not least, only opt for self-tied bow ties as clip-ons will be look too clown/costume like.

Black Skinny Tie & Suit

Especially younger men often opt for a slightly dressed down version of a classic black-tie ensemble. The tux is swapped for a black suit, and the bow tie is being replaced with a solid black necktie. To complement the more “dressed down” look, we suggest you add a more trendy touch by opting for black skinny ties as well as slim fitting suits. Pair the black skinny tie and black suit with solid white shirt, silver tie bar, silver cufflinks, and a solid white pocket square – a contemporary look that is modern, unique, yet still fits into the black-tie dress code.
