Investing in Quality Mens Clothing

Investing in Quality Mens Clothing

mens-clothing-qualityAdvertising hype could be blamed for the high prices of menswear – those men’s fashion shows in New York couldn’t have been cheap – but that’s not the whole story. At the end of the day, you’re still paying all those extra Benjamins for something unquantifiable, not entirely tangible but wholly undeniable: quality. And it’s all worth the cost.

Premium men’s fashion, to an extent, is priced that high for a reason. Don’t expect to get quality unless you pay for it, since there’s no way you’ll get a silk tie, high-grade wool suit and real leather shoes for pennies.

Why Invest in Quality Fashion?
There’s a simple answer to this: quality clothes look better. Try on a random shirt in your size from Target, and then do the same at Barneys or Bergdorf or some men’s boutique whose brand equity is unquestionable. Even when the piece isn’t exactly your style, there will always be something there that makes the pricier one look a lot more attractive.

It’s not just the celebrities in the ads or the piped in music in the fitting room (but those are pluses, of course). There’s also the fact that quality materials and a higher standard of craftsmanship – or, at least, manufacturing – went into the making of those clothes.

Silk neckties, cashmere sweaters and tweed coats are just a few of the pieces that you’ll want to heavily spend on. Why are these items so worth buying?

They’re worth buying – premium or otherwise – because they’re timeless style pieces no guy should go without. They’re worth buying premium because the material quality (and, consequently, the quality of the garment itself) is roughly proportional to how much you spend. You get what you pay for in men’s fashion, which is why paying a lot for a piece of clothing isn’t so bad once you consider what you’ll be getting.

At the same time, these are the items that are so visible on your outfit. It’s less about the visibility of the brand or the label, and more about how obvious it usually is when it’s cheap. A cheap necktie or suit is immediately evident, especially to a trained observer. That’s not the kind of impression you want to create, particularly at formal events.

Quality Means Value
You might’ve picked up earlier that the pieces worth getting premium – all the suits and neckties and shoes – are also the timeless styles that you should always have around. You can only make the most of their timelessness, however, if they can last that long.

When you’re shopping for premium men’s fashion, don’t just think about the price that you pay. Take the quality of the product into consideration as well because that’s the only way you’ll get a realistic perspective of its value. Sure, that shirt from the bargain bin is under $20. Does it fit you well? Will it still fit you well after 10 washings? Those are the kinds of questions you won’t have to keep asking when you buy investment style pieces.

It’s true that they will cost you money – up to three or five times the price of department store brands, even. When you think about all the years of service and the great looking outfits you’ll get out of them, though, the cost doesn’t seem so great. After a few years, you’d have forgotten all about the price tag. In fact, the only question you’re likely to be asking is why you didn’t buy those clothes sooner.
