Men’s Fall Fashion 2012: Plaids & Checks

Plaid Fashion Guide for Fall 2012

plaid-pants-2012-mensEvery time fall comes around, fashion-forward men throughout the country do whatever they can to start thinking about ways to differentiate their mode of dress. The cooler temperatures almost always mean that it’s time to wear warmer clothing; especially for those who live in cold-weather climates. While materials often come into play in this regard, switching to new patterns can also be quite functional. One of the best patterns to wear throughout the fall is plaid, and doing so doesn’t have to be difficult. Even if you’ve never worn plaid in the past, you can rest easy knowing that the pattern is quite popular, and that most men can pull it off with extreme ease. Consider the following tips for wearing plaid, all of which can help you to incorporate the pattern into your own look. This is our 4th part of our eight part Fall Fashion series.

Consider Plaid Pants
For most people, the idea of wearing plaid is almost always restricted to the upper half of the body. Indeed, plaid shirts are quite popular, and can definitely look great on most men when worn with the right selection of pieces. This being said, you might want to consider experimenting with plaid pants at some point this fall. Plaid pants can look great on those who have a slim figure; skinny plaid pants are especially effective. The great thing about plaid pants is that they can be used to draw attention to one’s self without looking as if you’re trying too hard, and anyone who is fashion-forward knows just how effective a subtle attention-grabbing item such as this can be in the long run. Our tip: opt for slim fitted pants that feature a subtle plaid pattern in darker colors. The pants pictured above, which are out of Etro’s current Fall collection, are a perfect example.

Keep it to a Minimum
Plaid can be extremely effective when worn correctly; most people can agree with this. Taking it too far, on the other hand, can cause a great deal of issues, and should be avoided at all costs. Keeping plaid to a minimum means wearing one item that features the pattern at a time. In other words, you should never wear plaid pants with a plaid shirt. The chances of clashing are extremely high if you take this route, and can make even the nicest pieces look ridiculous on just about any man. By sticking to the “one plaid item at a time” rule, you’ll be on the right track and won’t have to worry nearly as much about clashing as you would if you were to pile plaid items on top of one-another.

Stick With Warm Colors
Plaid patterns typically incorporate at least a few different colors; sometimes many more. In the fall, however, you’ll do best by shopping for items that incorporate the fall color scheme, and avoiding those which incorporate colors that are more in-line with spring and summer. Oranges, browns and deep yellows are perfect for the fall, however, while lighter colors (light green, for example) can cause a distinct disconnect during the cooler months of the year. Always take your intuition into account, and don’t be afraid to put an item back on the shelf. After all, if it looks wrong, it probably is.
