Mens Fashion Basics – 3 Tips for Smarter Style

Three Tips for Smarter Style

smarter-mens-styleNo matter what the scenario, it’s fair to say that settling into a routine will happen to anyone if they spend a long enough time dressing the same way. While routine isn’t always a huge problem in men’s fashion, it can actually lead to a feeling of being humdrum and stuck in a rut. No one wants to become a caricature of themselves, which is why it’s important to put some effort into keeping your fashion sense in flux. Even if you feel as if you’ve finally settled into the look that’s right for you, there’s a good chance that you could be doing more to push yourself towards a more fashionable you. The following are three tips for smarter style, which every guy who cares about fashion owes it to himself to take into consideration.

1. Make a Strong Commitment
It’s not uncommon for men to decide that they want to do something and obsess over the concept for a short period of time, only to drop everything altogether after the luster has worn off. This is especially common with diet and exercise, although it can certainly apply to trying to elevate one’s fashion. In order to truly make waves and work towards smarter style, you’ve got to make a strong commitment that can realistically be followed up on. More often than not, simply promising yourself that you’re going to make a change isn’t enough. Rather, you should set out to write down your goals and set reminders for yourself in order to ensure that you stay on track. In order to avoid burning out, strive to keep your goals as attainable as possible, as you can always ramp things up as you become more comfortable experimenting with your style. As a good starting point, subscribe to magazines like GQ, Vanity Fair, Men’s Health, etc. A year’s subscription will only cost you $10-$15 which brings us right to my next point: Setting a Budget.

2. Set a Budget
Most men wish they could say that money is not an issue when it comes to buying new clothes; or anything, for that matter. The fact is, however, everyone has to pay the bills, and foolishly throwing money down on clothing that you can’t afford will do nothing but set you up for trouble down the road. As a result, you should strive to set a budget for yourself early on so that you don’t exceed your spending limits. Since designer items can be rather pricey, you may want to consider shopping at a vintage thrift store. High-end thrift stores often sell gently-used designer goods at prices that seem too good to be true, saving you hard earned cash that can be spend at a tailor instead (because, let’s face it, proper fit is the most important thing). Here is a good example: I recently found a Harris Tweed Vintage sports coat at a local antique fair for $30. I spend another 20 bucks to get is alterterd to fit my body type perfectly. The result: dozens of compliments every-time I wear this jacket. This is to prove that fashion doesn’t have to be expensive.

3. Play Off Your Strengths
A lot of people think that taking steps towards shifting one’s style requires means completely changing the way they dress. This couldn’t be further from the fact, as doing so doesn’t usually end well. Rather, you should play off of your strengths and take what you already know you do well as being a good base to work off of. For example, if you tend to wear jeans regularly and feel as if they work well for you, you should consider playing to this instead of switching over to slacks; perhaps try wearing a blazer if you typically just wear a t-shirt, for example. If you start with what you know is a strength for you, your chances of falling flat when experimenting with your style will be much lower than they might be otherwise.
