Mens Shirt Collars

A Shirt Collar Style Guide

shirt-collars-stylesMen’s fashion pays a lot of attention to fit (which is why tailors are such an integral part of the industry, but that’s another idea altogether). It thus follows that shirts, as one of the most basic pieces any guy could wear, are also some of the neediest when it comes to fit. Everything from the hem of the shirt up to the collar – especially the collar – should be made to work with the rest of your outfit.

Collars are a crucial consideration because they have to be in sync with both the shape of your face and the necktie style you wear. You may not necessarily look ugly when you don’t choose right, but chances are good that you’ll feel something off about the outfit.

The Spread Style
Spread collars are like the denim of shirting. They’re the most versatile style you could buy, going with everything from the classic width necktie to the most modern slim cuts. At the same time, they’re a lot friendlier for men because they’re not as finicky when it comes to the shape of your face.

If you’re like a majority of guys who consider their facial shapes normal – or who can’t identify the shape at all – getting a spread collar is a good idea. It’s the go-to choice for when you can’t make up your mind, or don’t know how to. Not only is it able to work with a good number of face shapes, but it also complements all but the most formal of dress codes as well. In short, grab one if you’re in too much of a hurry to decide.

Necktie knots also don’t need to be as precise with a spread collar, but you’ll want to stick to the larger end of the knot size spectrum. For safety’s (and style’s) sake, though, it’s hard to beat the combination of a medium width tie in a perfectly tied double Windsor knot.

The Straight-Point Style
Many fashion-forward men lean toward straight-point collars since they’re seen as the savvier choice. Part of the reputation comes from the fact that the collar style usually goes best with narrower neckties, which in turn is seen as a fashion statement for the young, modern and edgy man.

Straight-point collars are also seen as a dressier option because they go so well with suits. Besides the fact that a kind of necktie goes so well with them, the graceful elongation of the collar is perfect for helping keep it neatly tucked under your jacket. There’s function to this form, making it a worthy addition to any man’s wardrobe.

A straight-point collar is the best complement for a guy with slimmer proportions, which is just as well because it was made for slim neckwear too. Regular proportions in the tie department can fly too, though probably not as well.

The Button-Down Style
Regarded the most casual species of collar, the button-down is great for more than just weekends off. In a fine enough fabric – think higher grade cotton instead of regular oxford – this variety can be a good match for your office wardrobe as well. The line has to be drawn at a casual dinner out, though; pulling off a button-down collar at strictly formal events is nothing short of improbable.

Medium width mens ties are the best match for button-down collars since they maintain the balance and avoid directing too much attention to the couple extra buttons. Since it is a casual style, the knot need not be perfect (or finished, for that matter). A knit tie also makes a very style-savvy substitute so do classic striped Regimental Ties.
