Guide to Men’s Tie Dress Code

White-Tie-Dress-CodeDid you get invited to a white tie affair? Then consider yourself privileged since this most formal dress code is typically associated with Royal and presidential affairs, exclusive Balls, and high society dinners and fundraisers. Below is a quick guide on how to dress for this formal function.

The Classic Tailcoat
Classic white tie requires men to be dressed in a black or midnight blue tailcoat jacket. Both, single and double breasted cuts are popular. The classic tailcoat usually has pointed lapels that are not attached to the collar. Proper tailoring is key for a appropriatly looking white tie ensemble. The tailcot should hug the torso, the front should be long enough to cover the waistcoat but not too long to extend over the pants, and the tails should just reach the knees.

Waistcoat & Dress Shirt
The classic white tie waistcoat is white in color and typically made from pique. The formal waistcoat can be single or double breasted and typically has round or square lapels. In addition the traditional white tie waistcoat has two welt pockets used to store a pocket watch, ticket stubs, and other small items.

The dress shirt must have a wing-tip collared dress shirt. It is typically pleated in the front, has French or double cuffs that are closed with cufflinks, and are buttoned up using decorative studs in black or ivory that match the cufflink set.

The Right Neckwear
Classic white tie must be worn with self tied white bow ties. If the waistcoat is made from pique then the bowtie should also be made from the matching white pique fabric. Typicaly the classic butterfly bow tie is worn but bow ties with pointed tips are also acceptible. The bow tie style is purely based on personal taste.

Popular Accessories
Other common accessories are formal patent leather dress shoes that are either classic lace-ups or pumps, pocket watches, a top hat, and a Chesterfield overcoat.
