Modern Tweeds for the Modern Man

suits-mens-tweed-fabricIn today’s modern world, many people view tweed as having taken a backseat to other styles and materials. The fact is, tweed still matters, as is evident in Hollywood and the celebrity sphere. Tweed may be considered “retro” or “throwback” by some, but it remains every bit as important as it used to be in the fashion industry. All this said, wearing tweed effectively is often easier said than done, and typically requires a great deal of thought in order for things to fall into place correctly. While tweed isn’t necessarily easy to accessorize with, doing so is far from impossible. The following are just a few tips for helping you to incorporate tweed into your ensembles while looking your best at all times.

Invest in a Sports Coat
When shopping for tweed, you’re likely to find a great deal of two and three-piece suits for sale. That said, your best bet is to invest in a sports coat that can be viewed as all-purpose in nature. Tweed sports coats are available in a variety of different patterns, with plaid and herringbone being not only the most popular, but also the most versatile. When it comes to choosing color or pattern scale, you can use your personal preference and discretion in doing so, as each comes with its own unique pairing possibilities. Keep in mind, however, that “busy” patterns often result in a less versatile coat, and should be avoided if at all possible.

Go With Bold-Colored Pants
Tweed sport coats are actually capable of exuding a great deal of depth; something that cannot be said for solid-colored coats. As a result, it can be very effective to highlight one of the colors found in your coat with a boldly-colored pair of pants. For example, if your tweed features thin blue lines, you can get a lot of mileage out of wearing pants that are of the same exact shade of blue. Note that you should never wear pants that are the same color as the dominant color in your coat, as clashing is simply too large of a possibility in such a case. Experiment with different colored pants in order to find the combination that most speaks to you.

Stick With Leather Boots
As tweed is a relatively outdoorsy material, it’s best to stick with footwear that will effectively help to accentuate this. Leather boots are not only attractive on their own, but look great when paired with a tweed sports coat. When choosing a pair of leather boots, do with those which are light-brown in color, which can be paired with a great deal of different tweed patterns and colors. In addition, avoid slip-on boots, instead opting for lace-up varieties. Stitched patterns can also be very attractive when up against a tweed sports coat, and can help to make your boots stand out even more. Note that low-top boots typically work best in this scenario, as cowboy boots and other varieties can draw too much attention to themselves.
