New Outerwear for Fall 2011

Fall Fashion Essentials 2011: New Outerwear

mens-fall-overcoatCool weather has always been a good friend to fashion because it lets you do wonders with your layers. It’s especially helpful for stylish men like you, who have much fewer choices than women when it comes to wardrobe. Like most other things, though, trends in outerwear emerge from season to season, little details that separate the dressed from the well-dressed.

The Brown Biker Jacket
With men’s fashion re-embracing the iconic outerwear piece, the leather biker jacket is no longer limited to just the eponymous Harley rider. Nowadays, a good leather jacket is a status symbol that you know your fashion, and that you’re willing to invest in it.

Biker jackets remain unchanged in one respect: there’s a very real risk of frump if you’re not very familiar with what the right kind of jacket looks like. As of this decade, the ideal leather biker jacket is fitted – shoulders hitting exactly at yours, hem not beyond your waist – and trim. Any dad appeal usually comes from excess sags and bags, which make them Public Enemy #1.

Contrary to popular belief, it’s not just boot-cut jeans and sweaty tank tops for pairing with a leather jacket. It’ll still be as striking if you wear it with a nice solid shirt with a necktie in some happy color. The latter combination strikes a professional bias but does not detract from the kind of attitude that a leather jacket can add to your outfit.

The Cropped Peacoat
Peacoats have been in men’s fashion for a very, very long time, a shorter alternative to the standard (and usually very heavy) full trenchcoat. This season’s trend is to push the envelope on the brevity of the peacoat to make a bold yet distinct style statement.

A peacoat would traditionally have covered around your seat (as opposed to trenches that hit around your thighs). This season, you may want to try one of countless shorter choices that end just above the seat of your trousers. It’s the shortness of the piece that makes it seem so young, fresh and anti-establishment. While it’s perfect for stepping out to grab a quick lunch, it’s just as workable for an officer or professional setting.

Versatility is one of the strengths of peacoats in general, and the cropped version isn’t so different. Although this particular variety offers less cover (and is thus less formal) than its fuller-length siblings, it can do double duty from Sunday to Monday as well.

The Herringbone Overcoat
While nobody’s sure just yet how bad this winter’s going to be, you – and your closet – may as well batten down the hatches. Nothing’s worse for one’s style than being caught unawares and being forced to wear a hideous outfit because of a lack of options.

Most guys are intimidated by herringbone, but it’s actually one of the most classic and less demanding patterns in men’s fashion. It’s something that has a very professional and high-class heritage, but at the same time won’t look out of place if you decide to take a walk through the city in the fall chill – even in a tee and a pair of jeans.

In these layer-friendly times, practical style always includes one or two layering pieces. They’re items that you may as well keep on-trend, especially since dressing for the season so often means that it’s your outerwear making the first impression for your outfit.
