Guide to Polka Dot Ties

matching-polka-dot-tiesAdd some new patterns to your business outfit with a modern polka dot tie! Not sure what color to choose from? What about the size of the polka dots? And what is the best way of combining a polka dot tie with other patterns such as checkered shirts and/or pin-striped suits. If you need some tips on wearing a polka dotted tie, then this guide is for you.

1. Colors
One of the most important things to consider when shopping for a polka dotted tie are the colors. Unless you want to dress for a costume party, a polka dotted tie should simply use two colors. One color on the background, and another complimenting color on the dots. The combination possibilities are endless. Most popular are black ties with white or silver polka dots, navy ties with yellow, white, or red polka dots, as well as light blue ties with navy, white, or silver polka dots.

2. Size of the Polka Dot
As a general rule, the smaller and more intricate the pattern, the more elegant it will be. Thus, best are ties with very small polka dot pattern smaller than 1/8 of an inch. Larger polka dots remind too much of Mickey Mouse and are unsuited for business.

3. Matching a Polka Dot Tie
Two things need to be taken into consideration when matching a tie with polka dot pattern to shirt and suit. First, make sure the colors compliment all other clothing pieces. Best are polka dot ties whose dots add nice accent color but still harmonize with the rest of the outfit. A good example is black tie with fine white or silver polka dots worn on top of a classic white dress shirt.

Second, consider the other patterns on shirt and suit. Polka dotted ties can be worn with striped and checkered shirts as long as the patterns are different in size – meaning that small polka dots should be paired with a tie that has either wider spaced stripes or larger scale check pattern.

4. When Not to Wear a Polka Dot Tie?
Polka dots are considered playful and a bit less serious. Thus, certain events are unsuited for a polka dotted tie. A good example are formal events and funerals. For more information you might also want to read our guide on matching ties.
