Everyday Men’s Fashion: Season Shopping

seasonal-fashion
Men’s fashion retailers and designers alike roll out new collections every other season, supposedly the new ‘must-haves’ of the coming months. While you don’t have to snap up every single new arrival, each new season is an opportunity to add a little more to your wardrobe. Here’s how to get maximum style potential for the least expense.

Small Updates
The GQ set knows that sometimes the smallest items can have the largest impact on your outfit; such is the way of men’s fashion. A garment costing $10 can have the same kind of effect as an item forty or fifty times the price. You just have to know what to look for.

For the white-collar, suit-wearing guy, neckties are likely the most cost-effective style purchases you can find. They give color and trend value to your daily outfit, all for less than $50 a pop. Buying enough mens ties to update your wardrobe from Monday to Friday won’t make a huge dent in your savings, even if you do it every season.

Aside from neckties, find other places where you can sneak in some color. Silk knots and pocket squares are popular (and cheap) items to buy for a new fashion season. Belts and basic tees give you a lot of style mileage, especially if you like to express your personal style on weekends. For this fall, everyone’s buying into colorful and printed statement socks as the new designer label trend.

Investment Pieces
No season is complete without the stereotypical bank-busting items with price tags that go from $200 to infinity. You won’t be going on a shopping spree among these clothes anytime soon, but you should definitely think about making one or two purchases.

Every man’s closet has to have at least a few of these investment pieces – high-quality garments that cost a lot, but give a lot of style mileage in return too. Careful choices of classic men’s fashion (and the patience to wait for price-off sales) will mean that your two or three Benjamins will go as far as they possibly can.

Leather shoes, suits and coats can be worth at least $150, especially with a really good brand name or custom tailoring involved. Modern men are also seeing the value of owning a tux (and accompanying shirt and black bow tie) and leather jacket that’s all their own.

Style Splurges
People typically regard many of each fashion season’s new items as non-necessities, and they’re usually right. That doesn’t go to say, however, that you shouldn’t consider buying one or two of them every season as well, budget permitting.

Accessories most often fall into this category: $60 sneakers, $100 luggage, $50 watches and the like. If you have a little left over from last month’s budget, though, you should definitely think about splurging on these little luxuries instead of game tickets or a steak dinner. They exponentially expand the mix-and-match abilities of your wardrobe, as well as adding some young, fresh personality to your closet.

Bold colors and pop culture references are the best and most fun men’s fashion splurges. Not only are they a kick to pick out, but they let your personal sense of style show via pieces that are eye-catching and anything but generic.

You don’t have to shop yourself into the poor house, but not all your clothes have to come from some 1998 bargain basket either. Patience, careful buying and a bit of trend watching should soon give you a killer but cost-effective wardrobe.
