Tying a tie takes a little more than simply wrapping a necktie around your neck with a simple Four in Hand knot. Khowing which tie knot suits which design and matched what type of shirt collar is just the beginning (for more information you may also want to visit our Expert Tie Tips)

What is the Dimple
The dimple – as the tie expert calls it – is a crevice-like fold that is held in place with the knot.

Why the Dimple Matters
The fold created by the dimple adds more texture to the tie and gives the tie a more sophisticated look. In addition the dimple helps reflect the light, adds more sheen to the silk, and gives the tie a nicer drape. Finally, and most importantly, the dimple draws attention to the knot and leads the observer to the tie wearer’s face and not to to the tie itself.

How to Make a Dimple
The dimple is made in the final step of tying a tie. Before tightening the knot slide a finger inside the knot and pinch the tie to create a crevice. Then tighten the knot while at the same time pulling out your finger. Pinch the tightened knot and the dimple will stay in place.

Single vs. Double Dimples
Some might try to convince you that you should try to create a “double dimple” – meaning two crevices that are next to each other. Truth is that this is a Paux Fas. In fact there is not such a thing as a double Dimple.
