Man's watch guideAny guy who has a strong interest in fashion owes it to himself to own a high-quality wrist watch. Watches are not only extremely useful for telling time and staying on task throughout a given day, but can be also be quite fashionable, serving as the perfect accessory for the right ensembles. The fact is, there are a variety of different things that one should look for when shopping for a wrist watch, and finding the one that is right for you can take quite a bit of scouring and thought. So long as you have a good idea as of what to look for in a wrist watch, however, you shouldn’t have any issues finding the perfect piece.

Consider It’s Weight
The weight of a wrist watch actually has a great deal to do with the quality of its construction. As one might expect, it’s typically best to stick with watches that are on the heavy side (in regards to its size). Heaviness is often an indication that a watch is reliable, well-built and constructed out of quality materials. A watch that doesn’t feel as if it is heavy enough for its size may well be cheaply made, and will typically last for a short period of time in comparison to heavy watches.

Focus on the Movement
The next thing you’ll want to look at when checking out watches is the movement, or “sweep.” A cheap, low-quality watch will almost always be feature the characteristic “tick-tock” that is often associated with old clocks and watches. High-quality watches, on the other hand, are those which feature mechanisms that are capable of producing extremely smooth sweeps, allowing the hands to glide without any staggering or other interruptions. This not only makes for a more attract watch face, but actually improves the accuracy of a watch by quite a bit. If the movement on a watch you’re considering seems jerky or rigid, put the watch down and look elsewhere. As one might expect, it’s important to note that watches that feature smooth sweeps will almost always be more costly than those which are rigid.

Don’t Underestimate Brand Recognition
While shopping specifically based on brand is never a good idea, it’s important to realize that brand recognition means quite a bit in the world of watches. Companies such as Rolex, Chopard and Cartier have been making high-quality watches for many years, and just the mention of their individual names connotes quality. Shopping within the catalogue of a well-established brand does not necessarily mean you won’t run into any issues whatsoever, but can dramatically increase your chances of ending up with a long-lasting watch of the utmost quality. For best results, shop at a physical retailer when looking for a watch, as this will not only help you to narrow in on a specific brand or two, but will allow you the luxury of trying on each watch before purchasing anything. Yes, you are paying for the brand name, but keep in mind that a high end designer watch is a statement piece that can be passed down generations.

Note on Color, Material, & Shape
Choose a color to your liking and to coordinate with your wardrobe. If you find yourself wearing belts with golden belt buckles quite frequently, then a golden watch might be your best option. The wristband options available are another personal choices. Metal bands are more durable but typically are also considered to be less formal. Leather bands are more comfortable and are easier/quicker to adjust. Just like the face’s color should be matched to other hardware on your ensemble (belt buckle, cufflinks, etc), so should the band. Choose a leather band that matches your shoes and belt. Finally, let’s talk about shape and size. Oversized watches are in style but keep in mind that the watch size should be proportionate to your wrist and hand size. The shape you choose is a personal preference with round being the most common and timeless style.
