Accessorizing with Multiple Leather Pieces

How to Wear Multiple Leather Pieces in One Outfit

matching-leather-accessories-mens-fashionLeather is one of the most attractive and versatile materials in the world of fashion. Utilized most often in the design of jackets, belts, wallets, watches and shoes, leather is often the key to adding an attractive highlight to what might otherwise be a rather subtle ensemble. When it comes to accessorizing with multiple leather pieces at once, however, it’s important to approach the pairing process with care; a haphazardly thrown-together outfit with two or more leather pieces is very likely to clash and cause a disconnect. So long as you understand the basics of pairing leather pieces with one another, however, you can get a lot out of incorporating this technique into your look. The following tips can help you to accessorize with leather in as attractive a way as possible.

Pairing Belts and Shoes
Most fashion-forward men find that belts are suitable just about every situation imaginable. As a result, it’s important to learn how to accessorize them effectively. Generally, the first thing you should look at when choosing a belt is what shoes you’re going to be wearing. If you intend to wear leather shoes, the belt you pick should be of a similar color and level of formality as the shoes. That said, color doesn’t have to be exact, so long as it is in the same family; blacks should be paired with blacks, browns with browns etc. Strive to stick within the same tonal ballpark as well, as colors that are more than slightly different from one another will likely clash. Likewise, you should never pair two items that are of different levels of formality; a pair of formal leather shoes, for example, will cause a disconnect when paired with a raggedy, beat-up leather belt (which can be very effective if worn casually).

Coordinating Accessories
If you enjoy the look and feel of leather, there’s a good chance that you have quite a few different leather accessories in your wardrobe. While pairing accessories can be tricky, it’s far from impossible. Starting with your watch, strive to match it with the color of your belt (or shoes, if you plan to wear leather). You’ll have an extra bit of leeway here, in that it is possible to pair a tan watchband with a brown belt without worry of clashing. Don’t worry about your wallet, which should only be viewed when it’s time to pick up the tab and likely will not affect your overall appearance. Gloves, however, should be paired very carefully in order to look right. Ensure that your gloves fit within the same color family of any other leather pieces that you’re wearing, as pairing black and brown leathers almost always looks out of place.

Pairing Metals
When paired correctly, metal and leather can compliment each other quite well. As a result, it’s not uncommon to find leather pieces that incorporate metal buckles or clasps; especially on belts and shoes. Typically, these metals are either gold or silver in color. For best results, strive to wear pieces that stick to one of these two colors. While some people may be able to pull off wearing a silver belt buckle with boots that feature gold clasps, for example, the chances of clashing are simply too high to bother going down this path.
