Psychology of Colors in Mens Fashion

mens-fashion-colorsPay attention to how you choose an outfit, and chances are you’ll notice that one of the first things you think about is color. Indeed, color has a massive influence over the appearance of any ensemble, and for good reason. Many people don’t realize just how much psychology is involved in the process of choosing colors to wear each day. The psychology of color is rather deep and involved; especially when it comes to clothing. The following are five of the most commonly worn colors, and the psychology impact they tend to have when worn as part of an outfit.

Blue
Blue is extremely common in the fashion world, whether it be found in jeans, Oxford shirts or mens ties. The main function of blue from a psychology standpoint is its ability to create a sense of calm and well-being. Blue also tends to exude loyalty on behalf of those who wear it, as well as a sense of professionalism; perhaps why it is such a popular color to wear to the office. In certain situations, blues that are especially deep can even convey a somber attitude, which is important to consider when putting together an outfit that leans in this direction. Blue is the perfect color for wearing to an interview, as well as the first week on a new job. If you are looking to wear blue to the office then there are endless choices in midnight blue suits, light blue dress shirts, and of course Blue Mens Ties.

Red
Red is another color that commonly pops up in fashion; especially amongst those who wear ties often. Red can be seen as an being indicative of passion, drive and determination, making it an excellent color to wear when meeting a new client for drinks or coffee. In fact, red ties are often referred to as “power ties” as a result of the air of confidence they typically give off. It’s important to use restraint when wearing red, however, as adding too much (ie: more than one piece) to your ensemble often comes off as smothering, or even antagonistic. Given red’s ability to showcase passion, it makes for an excellent color to wear on a first date, or even for a meeting in which you want to grab people’s attention. Want to add color but don’t want a red power tie? Then more muted reds (those with a larger portion of brown) are perfect. Excellent tie colors are cherry, burgundy, and maroon.

Green
There are a lot of reasons why one might want to incorporate green into an ensemble. In a word, green is “clean.” Simple, organic and natural, green is similar to blue in that it often exudes a sense of calm and tranquility, which makes it a good color to wear in situations that might be considered stressful. Many people also consider green to be associated with wealth, as it can display a dominant personality when worn often. That said, green looks strange when worn as part of certain elements, including pants and shoes. Green’s tranquility makes it ideal for everyday wear, as well as in relaxing scenarios such as a day at the art museum.

Black
Black is no doubt one of the most important colors in fashion, and its power should not be underestimated. Official, elegant and exuding the utmost in class, black is perhaps the most formal of all colors, which is the reason why “black tie” events get their name. Black can be indicative of drama, mystique, and wonder, not to mention professionalism. The best thing about black is its versatility, as the color can be applied to shoes, pants, shirts, jackets; anything, really. As a result, no wardrobe is complete without a sufficient amount of black pieces; especially for individuals who work in the professional sector. Black should be reserved mainly for formal or somber scenarios, although many people find it to be the perfect color for an evening out at a night club or bar. Also keep in mind that black can the slimming (especially if combined with fine vertical pin-stripes) – perfect for those men that want to looks a few pounds without having to go to the gym.
