Guide to Vest & Waistcoats

More Style with Vests

mens-vests-mens-necktiesA lot of guys who are new to men’s fashion have yet to step foot into the world of men’s vests. In the past, vests were seen quite often, and amongst a wide range of different types of people. While vests aren’t nearly as commonly worn today as in the past, they are beginning to see a resurgence, and can actually look fantastic when worn correctly. Incorporating vests into your ensemble doesn’t need to be nearly as difficult as you might think; especially if you take the time to put the right amount of thought into the buying process. The following are just a few crucial tips for choosing the right vest for you, all of which can help you to raise the bar on your sense of style.

Fit is Everything
There are a variety of different elements that need to be taken into consideration when shopping for the perfect vest, but fit is perhaps the most important. A vest that doesn’t fit correctly will do absolutely nothing to flatter your figure, and should be avoided at all costs. When worn, the vest should fall just below the top of a pair of trousers, so as not to show any of your dress shirt. Otherwise, the vest will inevitably appear too short and will make your ensemble appear sloppy. Be sure that the sides and back of the vest are cut a bit higher than the front, which will allow the piece to sit more naturally on your body.

Material
Vests can be made out of a variety of different materials, and each has it’s own place in men’s fashion. Cotton, for example, is one of the most commonly used materials in the production of men’s vests. Many people like cotton because it is easy to care for and relatively inexpensive; perfect for anyone who is on a budget and doesn’t want to devote a great deal of time and effort to caring for their clothing. Silk is often commonly used in the production of vests, and is ideal for anyone who wants to truly draw attention to themselves in a rather subtle manner. That said, silk can be expensive, and caring for it isn’t as easy as with cotton. The material you choose should depend upon your personal preferences, as well as your budget.

Color/Pattern
You’ve got a lot of options when it comes to choosing the colors and patterns that your vest will feature. Many people choose vests that are grey or navy blue, which can be worn with a great deal of other colors and types of garments. Others, however, choose to take a riskier approach by wearing vests that are deep red in color, or feature elaborate patterns; two options that can be difficult to pull off, but very attractive when worn correctly. If you plan on attending an event that is even remotely formal, you’ll do best by wearing a solid neutral. Otherwise, feel free to experiment with different colors and patterns until you find the one that you identify with most.

Vests & Ties
Neckties look fantastic when paired with a vest. Be it as part of a 3-piece suit, or part of a more casual/trendy look of slim fit designer jeans, dress shirt, and vest. Because only the upper part of the necktie is visible, knowing how to tie a perfect tie knot is crucial. Match the size of the tie knot to your collar spread and the style of the tie. Skinny Ties for instance look much better with a smaller tie knots that compliments the slim aesthetics of the trendy skinny tie. For more information please view our guide on How to Tie a Necktie.
