Interview Dress Code For Men

How to Dress for a Job Interview

dress-for-successYou may have heard people say things like “Dress For Success” or “Dress Like a Million Bucks” or “Clothes Make the Man”. Truth is that dressing up can create a favorable first impression that can benefit you with a job interview, on a meeting with clients, during a date, and pretty much any other occasion. Below are some simple dress tips you should follow before going to a job interview.

Suit vs. Suit-less
As a general rule it is better to slightly overdress than being too clothed too casual. Generally speaking the suit and tie look is the preferred dress code for a job interview. Non white collar job interviews on the other hand should be met with a less formal attire such as dressy slacks and a tugged in button up dress shirt.

Suit Color & Pattern
When going on a job interview it is important to remind yourself that you do not want to make a fashion statement. Instead you want to portray a professional and competent image. Therefore, a slightly more conservative attire is best. Most recruiters and fashion consultants will agree that the charcoal gray or midnight blue, single-breasted, 2-piece suit is the best outfit for a job interview. Patterns such as herringbone, checks, or pin-stripes should also avoided.

Shirts Color, Cut, & Pattern
Just as the suit is plain and simple in color and pattern, so should be the shirt. The dress shirt should be white in color and have a regular turn down collar. Make sure that the shirt fits you correctly, is clean, and wrinkle free.

The Tie
Best are conservative tie colors and pattern. Striped ties or solid color ties are best. Elaborate patterns such as paisleys, floral designs, or polka dots should be worn with more caution. The colors should be classic and conservative. The best tie colors for a job interview are navy, cherry, and burgundy red. Skinny ties, brightly colored neckties, as well as anything too flashy should be avoided – unless the job you are applying for requires a sense of fashion and creativity.

Shoes, Socks, & Accessories
Your shoes should be leather dress shoes. The classic oxford lace-up style in conservative black color is best. Make sure to polish your shoes beforehand! Your socks should match the color palette of the suit meaning navy suits should be paired with dark blue socks and charcoal suits should be worn with gray or black socks. The only type of acceptable jewelry are cufflinks, a wedding band, and a wrist watch.
