Men’s Winter Styles Dos and Donts

Fashion Dos & Donts for Winter 2011/12

mens-winter-fashion-dos-donts-tipsWinter is a great time for men of all walks of life to reevaluate their fashion sense and start thinking about how to get the most out of each ensemble. After all, there are a variety of different ways to approach dressing for colder weather, some of which are far more effective for certain individuals than for others. So long as you take the time to think about your style choices, however, you can ensure that you’re doing what’s necessary in order to look your best. The following are just a few men’s winter style “dos and don’ts;” advice that any guy can benefit from taking into consideration.

Do: Grab Yourself a Good Hat
When temperatures drop and winter sets in, there’s nothing more important than choosing the right hat for yourself. Hats serve a dual purpose, as they are not only effective at keeping the head warm, but can serve as the perfect accessory to the right outfit. Choosing the hat that is right for you typically involves deciding upon which style best fits your personality. For example, those who spend a lot of time outdoors will likely do well by choosing a knit hat, while individuals in the corporate world should consider a cabbie cap or similar style of hat.

Don’t: Wear A Scarf Incorrectly
Surprisingly enough, a lot of men simply don’t know how to wear scarves correctly. Tying a scarf doesn’t have to be nearly as difficult as people often make it out to be, and a well-tied scarf is night and day compared to those which are just thrown over the shoulder. All you have to do is fold the scarf lengthwise, drape it around the neck once and insert the other end in the hole that is created, adjusting for comfort. If you still have trouble, there are plenty of videos online that detail how to correctly tie a scarf.

Do: Layer Clothes Carefully
Cold temperatures often necessitate one to layer clothing in order to stay warm. While layering clothes is definitely an effective way to keep the cold at bay, it can quickly turn a nice outfit into a bulky mess. Strive to choose thin clothing items to layer with rather than bulky sweaters and other, similar items. If you find that your outfit is too bulky, try removing at least one layer in order to correct the issue. Layering takes experimentation in order to get the process down, which typically doesn’t happen overnight.

Don’t: Mix Athletic and Dress Clothes
The winter creates somewhat of a conundrum for many people, especially those who like to straddle fashion lines. While it can be tempting to pair ski gloves or boots with formal attire, however, the results typically clash and create a disconnect. Rather, strive to keep your mountain clothes separate from your work attire in order to avoid creating a potentially ugly ensemble. Note that athletic winter clothing can still be quite attractive, but it needs to be worn in context for best results.
