Five Fashion Mistakes to Avoid When Wearing Ties

necktie-fashion-faux-pasKnowing how to properly wear a tie will differentiate the dapper dude from the wannabe tie aficionado. To help you get on track to be the best dressed man in the office, here are the five worst mistakes a man can make when wearing a tie. Unfortunately these are all too common fashion faux pas. Learn to avoid them and you will already be better dressed than the average American tie wearer.

#1 Tie Fashion Mistake: Wrong Length
A tie should be tied so that the tip ends near the belt buckle. A tie that has been tied to short will look just as goofy as one that is reaching down to your knees. Our tip: Pay attention when tying your tie. Remember where you start off with your knot and then adjust accordingly.

#2 Tie Fashion Mistake: Gaudy Designs
Solids, stripes, polka dots, paisleys, plaid – all patterns that are perfect for any man’s wardrobe. So why do some men feel the need to add gaudy “big picture ties”? Our tip: Unless you are attending a comic-con leave your novelty ties at home. They simply have no place in a business setting.

#3 Tie Fashion Mistake: Kitschy Accessories
While tie bars have made big comeback (especially in combination with skinny ties), there are other styles of tie jewelry that are simply tacky. Tie accessories you should avoid are tie pins, collar bars, and tie chains. If you don’t know what any of these are, then trust us when we say there is no need to learn about them.

#4 Tie Fashion Mistake: Poor Tie Knots
A poorly tied necktie will even ruin the nicest and most luxurious designer tie. Learn how to properly tie the knot and practice making a dimple. Also, choose a knot that compliments the tie you are wearing as well as the shirt collar. For more information please check out our How to Tie a Necktie guide.

#5 Tie Fashion Mistake: Dress Code Faux Pas
There are some dress codes that will require a certain type of neckwear. One dress code that instantly comes to mind is “black tie” a formal outfit that will require you to wear a black bow tie (self-tied!!!). Other common dress codes requiring certain types of neckwear are: white tie, funerals, weddings, as well as when attention the infamous British horse race called “The Royal Ascot”.
