The Perfect Tie Length

Guide to Finding Your Perfect Tie Length

length-for-mens-tiesAlthough most necktie designers have one uniform tie length, 57-59 inches, some men will need longer length neckties. If tied properly, then the tip of the tie should end near the center of your belt buckle. Ties that are tied too short will make you look goofy and will actually add the illusion of a few extra pounds carried on your waist. Below is a tie length calculator that will ensure you will have the right tie length:

Take your height in inches and add your neck size in inches. Both, height and neck size are the two most important indicators of the tie length you will need. In addition, the type of tie knot also has some impact of the necktie’s length. Therfore, to find the perfect tie length, take the number you just calculated and add 1 inch for the following tie knots: Double Windsor Knot, Pratt Knot, and Prince Albert Knot – all larger knots that will require an extra inch of the necktie.

91 Inches and Less
If you calculated 103 inches or less, then a regular length necktie will be the right fit. This is about 95% of the male population.

92 – 94 Inches
A longer, XL length tie will be needed. Most extra long ties have an untied length of 61-63 inches. This will be the right length tie for you.

95 Inches +
You are a giant. Most men that fall into this group are taller than 6 foot 4 inches and also have a larger neck size. If this describes you, then a double XL tie will be right for you. Such XXL ties are difficult to come by and usually selection is quite limited. The right length necktie for this group of men (less than 1% of the US male population) would be 64-66 inches. Ties longer than 66 inches are almost always too long.
