Three Stylish Cardigans for Fall 2012

j-crew-cardigan-sweater-fall-2012The cardigan may be one of the most misunderstood pieces in men’s fashion. While far from being uncommon, many people find the cardigan to be a difficult piece to wear in a comfortable manner. This is especially true of men who are brand new to wearing cardigans, as they truly are unique when compared with other types of sweaters. Bearing this in mind, it should come as no surprise that the popularity of cardigans exists for a reason, and that the piece can be extremely effective when worn properly. Although not all cardigans are created equal, the following three pieces are of exceptional quantity while offering trendy seasonal style. This article is part of our Men’s Fall 2012 Fashion series.

J. Crew Merino Cardigan
J. Crew is synonymous with quality/modern menswear that doesn’t break the bank, and their Merino cardigan (pictured above) is one of the highest-quality pieces one can find at the price they’re selling it for (around $90). Constructed out of Merino wool, this lightweight piece is perfect for those who live in warm climates and are looking for that extra bit of cover without layering on too much fabric. Featuring a wide v-neck and 5 buttons, there are plenty of different options to play around with when it comes to wearing this piece; it looks great when layered over a denim button-up. This cardigan also features two pockets on the bottom left and right of the piece, making it just as functional as it is aesthetically pleasing. For the money, it’s difficult to find a cardigan on the market that features such quality construction and materials.

Banana Republic Heritage Shawl Cardigan
Anyone who lives in an area where temperatures can drop extremely fast in the fall and winter knows exactly how important it is to own a cardigan that provides a great deal of warmth, and the Banana Republic Heritage Shawl cardigan ($150) is the perfect piece to get the job done. Featuring a waffle-knit collar, wooden-toggle enclosures and ribbed trim, this piece is just as attention-grabbing as it is warm. A blend of cotton, nylon, viscose and angora make for a cardigan that provides plenty of warmth while remaining soft and comfortable at the same time. It even features two rather large front pockets – just in case you need to store something while you’re on the go.

H&M Lambswool Cardigan
Not everyone can afford to drop $150 on a single piece of clothing, which is one of the reasons why H&M is so celebrated in the men’s fashion community. Their lambswool cardigan retails for under $40, and offers some of the best “bang for your buck” on the market. With two front pockets, elbow patches and a 4-button enclosure, this is an extremely functional piece that can look fantastic when layered with something as simple as a t-shirt. At the price, it may be worthwhile to grab at least a few of these, as they are available in both tan and dark blue.
