Splurge on Men’s Fashion: Jeans

guide-mens-jeansJeans are about as ubiquitous as you can get in men’s fashion. Whether you’re in Africa or Akihabara, a pair of jeans will likely be on some guy in the immediate vicinity. One thing you should know, however, is that not all jeans are made equally. Those picture perfect ones you see in magazines and paparazzi snaps aren’t just because of the gym-toned legs behind them, but the inherent high quality of the jeans themselves.

A great pair of jeans isn’t created by a mere brand, but rather by a confluence of factors. First there’s the material itself, which must be rigid enough to hold a shape yet pliant to contour slightly to your body. Fit is just as important an element; it should be just snug enough to show some curve, but not to the point of being skinny jeans.

Premium Jeans, Premium Fabrics
Hollywood fashion’s hot denim brands command such a high price not just because of the roster of stars wearing the label, but because the material itself is usually shipped from Asia, Europe and various denim hot spots from all over the world. It’s not some excess of men’s fashion; those brands really do it to obtain the best denim on the planet.

A huge style premium is placed on raw denim because it’s the fabric at its purest and most untouched. When you buy jeans made from raw denim, the color is much more intense than what you’d get with the standard department store pair. Because the fabric is still stiff and untreated when you get it, the pants get broken in on your legs – meaning that, after a few years, you’ll get a pair that fits exactly on you.

This imported and premium fabric doesn’t come cheap, though; you’re likely to pay upwards of $100 per pair for them – easily five times the price of the department store variety of jeans. If you take the time to get the jeans used to your body, however, this kind of denim is your next best option to getting a pair tailored for yourself.

Premium Jeans, Premium Fit
Fit is one of the more problematic areas of the denim because it varies so widely from brand to brand, and because it largely comes down to personal preference. Premium jeans, however, hit the target more often when it comes to style and fit.

Dad jeans –styles with too high a waist, too wide a thigh and too tapered a leg – are all too common in the men’s area of department stores nowadays. At the same time, too many guys don’t know any better than to pick up this kind of pants. Whether you’re oblivious to fashion trends or simply don’t want to waste time and money guessing, the premium brand route saves you a lot of effort and resources.

What you’ll often find with premium men’s jeans are more fitted thighs, less tapered legs and waistlines that are closer to your natural waist (which is somewhere below your belly button, in case you didn’t know). That is, in fact, the ideal fit prescribed by most style pundits and writers.

Jeans that cost you a hundred dollars and up don’t necessarily offer you any exclusive advantages; you can still go look-for-less if you really want to. They do, however, give the connoisseur subtler benefits, such as sparing you from muddling though racks upon racks of ugly denim. That’s something quite a number of people are willing to pay for.
